Outbound Attachment at Sophia University, Tokyo Japan: ChM. Afifah Sidik Exploring Science Beyond Borders

"This experience was more than just research—it was a window into a new culture, new friendships, and a deeper appreciation of global scientific collaboration."From the quiet corridors of the lab to the bustling streets of Tokyo, ChM. Afifah Sidik, a postgraduate researcher from our institute, recently completed a three-month (April 7 – June 27, 2025) international research attachment at Sophia University, one of Japan’s prestigious private universities. Hosted by the Department of Materials & Life Sciences, Afifah joined the Polymer Science Group under the mentorship of Prof. Yuko Takeoka, where she immersed herself in high-impact research focused on bio-based materials for sustainable energy materials.

Her primary work revolved around the synthesis and characterization of bio-based tetraalkylammonium salts (TAS)—key building blocks for lead-free perovskite solar cells. Through the preparation of perovskite films and comprehensive material analysis, Afifah contributed to advancing eco-friendly approaches to solar energy, aligning with the global push for greener technologies. During her attachment, she took full advantage of the well-equipped, sophisticated, and state-of-the-art research facilities available at Sophia University. With access to a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary environment, she’s not only gained hands-on experience with advanced instrumentation but also participated in meaningful research discussions with lab members and faculty. These interactions provided her with new insights into experimental design, data interpretation, and future application potential in solar cell research.

Outside the laboratory, Afifah embraced the opportunity to experience Japan’s unique blend of tradition and innovation. Her stay coincided with the iconic sakura (cherry blossom) season, making her time in Tokyo even more memorable. From navigating the efficient metro system to enjoying local cuisine, she immersed herself fully in the Japanese way of life.

A special appreciation goes to Prof. Yuko Takeoka, Prof. Masahiro Yoshizawa-Fujita and the entire team at Sophia University for their support, guidance, and generosity throughout the attachment. Her journey stands as an inspiring example of how research can transcend borders, cultures, and disciplines. The experience also served to strengthen the collaborative relationship between Sophia University and our own institution—opening doors to future exchanges, shared research, and international networking.
